Last week I received a phone call from someone that sounded a bit Spanish....it was a call from Elder Whittaker's trainer...Elder Tyler Gledhill. He has recently returned from his mission in Costa Rica and said that he had a package that he brought home from Elder Whittaker from Costa Rica. He also mentioned that it was his homecoming on Sunday and that he would love for us to come. We have been so excited to meet Elder Gledhill because Logan talked so highly of him. While on the phone call Elder Gledhill expressed to me how much he loved Elder Whittaker and that he was his favorite companion.
On Sunday, we went to hear Elder Gledhill speak and were so grateful that we did. What a great young man and great missionary. You could tell he loved his mission and the people of Costa Rica. He told of a story of he and his companion(his companion was a greenie and very excited. He also didn't know much Spanish) that had come upon a woman in Costa Rica that was carrying platones(sp?) bunches of bananas. She would walk a bit and then set the bananas down and rest and she would do this frequently. The Elders stopped the woman and asked if they could help her carry the bananas for her and they assumed that she lived fairly close. The woman lived 5 miles down the road. The Elders carried the bananas for her all the way to her house. Elder Gledhill said he did most of the talking to this woman while the other Elder packed the banana's. When they got to the womans home, she asked them in for some lemonade. The Elders asked if they could share their message, and she said maybe another time. The greenie Elder was so excited to teach the gospel that he sat on the couch and in his weak Spanish expressed "Why don't we teach you now?" The woman looked at Elder Gledhill, like "Didn't he understand that I said another time?" but needless to say they taught this woman the gospel. The greenie Elder ended up being ELDER WHITTAKER!!! We loved hearing stories and look forward to getting together with Elder Gledhill again soon.
In the package that Elder Gledhill had from Elder Whittaker were soccer jersey's for his younger brothers! They were so excited that they came home and put them right on. We understand soccer is a huge sport in Costa Rica.
